Dunedin Public Art Gallery
In 2014 the Dunedin Public Art Gallery entered into a partnership arrangement with the Gordon Walters Estate. This saw a substantial collection of significant art works and research material transferred to the Dunedin Public Art Gallery on long term loan. This has allowed Gallery staff to undertake research and conservation, to facilitate public access and to undertake curatorial projects.
"The Gordon Walters Estate loan collection introduces a significant moment in New Zealand modernism into what is already one of the major public art collections in New Zealand. This working relationship between the Gordon Walters Estate and the Gallery helps to ensure that Walters' artistic legacy is cared for, publicly accessible, and active within both a national and international discourse." Cam McCracken, Director
The Dunedin Public Art Gallery is one of New Zealand's four major metropolitan art galleries. Established in 1884, the Gallery was New Zealand's first art gallery and is renowned today for the richness of its historic collection and close working relationship with major New Zealand artists.
The Gallery houses a significant collection of New Zealand artworks covering the period from 1880 to the present, along with major holdings of historical European art, Japanese prints and the decorative arts. Historical works by renowned artists such as Turner, Gainsborough, Claude and Machiavelli feature alongside the only Monet in New Zealand.
