In November 2017 a retrospective survey of Gordon Walters' artistic practice will open at Dunedin Public Art Gallery and will continue at Auckland Art Gallery in mid-2018. The exhibition will be accompanied by a significant publication.

Developed in partnership between Dunedin Public Art Gallery and Auckland Art Gallery, and curated by Lucy Hammonds, Laurence Simmons and Julia Waite, this exhibition provides an opportunity to explore Walters' work from its earliest stages in the 1940s through to the artist’s last works from the mid-1990s.

Including works from public and private collections across New Zealand, and material from the Gordon Walters Estate collection, this exhibition explores Walters' abstraction as a rich and continuing process across a career extending over five decades.

The Walters Estate and Starkwhite presented a small survey show of Gordon Walters koru paintings at Art Basel Hong Kong in 2015, with the support of Creative New Zealand. One of the key early works in the show (illustrated here) was acquired by M+, the new Hertzog & de Meuron-designed museum scheduled to open in Hong Kong in late 2019.  The recommendation to acquire the work came from the Museum's chief curator Doryun Chong.
